History of the Science Museum in London
The institution known as the Science Museum has a history spanning over 150 years. Its origins trace back to the Great Exhibition of 1851, held in Hyde Park. The success of this exhibition led to the establishment of the South Kensington Museum in 1857, now the location of the V & A (Victoria & Albert) Museum. Five years later, the science collections housed in the South Kensington Museum were relocated to Exhibition Road to accommodate other collections.
Over the ensuing decades, the institution saw the establishment of a science library and the appointment of a Science Collections Director. However, it wasn’t until the early 1900s that the name “Science Museum” was officially adopted.
Since then, the original location has undergone significant expansion, incorporating new buildings and replacing older structures. Additionally, it transitioned from a focus on professional audiences to catering more toward the general public.
Throughout the 20th Century, sister sites were opened both nationally and internationally. At the turn of the millennium, Queen Elizabeth II inaugurated the Science Museum’s newest wing, the Wellcome Wing.
